Jaishankar is confident about India’s permanent UNSC membership

India is now very close to get permanent UNSC membership – External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar said.
On Tuesday, Jaishankar expressed his strong feelings of India getting permanent seat in the UNSC membership.
“As India has been on the global trend for inclusion in UNSC. But we need to work hard on this and build the pressure on UNSC members for India’s inclusion’, he said.

What is UNSC and Permanent members?

UNSC (United Nations Security Council) have primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security in between countries. It has 15 members with each one has 1 vote. And all countries must accept decision of UNSC. UNSC membership owned countries have major responsibility with determining the existence of threat to the peace or any act of aggression. Security Council has 15 members (5 permanent and 10 non-permanent members) 5 permanent members with veto power: China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America 10 non-permanent members, five of which are elected each year by the General Assembly for a two-year term.

Jaishankar’s insights on UNSC membership

Jaishankar went 80 years back to highlight the UNSC scenario at that time. In 1945, there were only 50 countries and at that time countries such as France, China, Russia, UK (United Kingdom) and US (United States) came together and established United Nations Security Council. They themselves declared as the permanent members of the UNSC. He also elaborated that with time the worlds geography evolved significantly and the current count of countries in the world went to 193.
He said, “But these five nations have kept their control, and it is strange that you must ask them to give us their consent for a change. A few agree, a few other put forward their position with their honesty, while other do something from behind.”
But now Jaishankar strongly feel that India will get permanent UNSC membership and chances are increasing every year. Along with India, Japan, Germany and Egypt also put a proposal in front of UN and this will certainly make a positive impact in Favor of India, he believes.
Let’s understand what UNSC is.
UNSC stands for United Nations Security Council. It is established in 1945 and is one of the important organs of UN (United Nations). 

The following are the powers of UNSC.

  • Establishment of peacekeeping operations according to the protocols of UNGC Internal Sanctions if any.
  • Authorizing Military actions with the help of UNSC.
  • Identifying threat to peace and decide what actions to be taken against it.
  • Power to investigate internal dispute amongst countries.

India was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council by winning 184 out of 194 votes at UNGA.

What are the conflicts and Management?

Most of the personnel for peacekeeping operations come from South Asian nations such as Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Rwanda, in that order. However, in comparison to other industrialized economies, the US provides fewer personnel for the missions. Numerous nations have declared that the Security Council’s current configuration is unnecessary given the global geopolitical landscape of today.

The membership was only increased from six elected members to ten in 1965 and 1971, respectively, with China becoming a permanent member. The composition and organization of the Council have not altered since that time.
Nigeria, Brazil, India, Germany, Japan, and India have all applied for permanent seats on the Security Council to increase the body’s influence.

What made India not included in permanent members group?

India’s Chances

Experts shows confidence on getting India a permanent UNSC membership. As per a study conducted by the think tank Atlantic Council, India stands to gain if the Security Council gains additional seats in the coming years.

India is ranked first with a 26% possibility of securing a permanent seat on the UNSC, followed by Brazil (9%), Japan (11%). Nonetheless, 64% of those surveyed believe that by 2033, the UN’s most powerful council will not have any more permanent members.

The UK has demanded that India, Brazil, Germany, Japan, and Africa be included to the list of permanent members.
